Like all cities, Zoetermeer is in a state of continuous development. For the first time since its realization in the 1980s, the town hall square and surrounding buildings are undergoing a substantial transformation. An improved public space, a lively street frontage, a mix of functions and the exploitation of the presence of light rail are fundamental to achieving this.
Conversion of offices to loft apartments
On the east side of the square, a former office building is being converted into apartments with a large cafe/restaurant programme at ground level. To give the street frontage more substance, and extra level is being added.
What sets this conversion apart is the access system, which is based on Le Corbusier’s Unité typology: a central corridor with apartments on both sides. Because these apartments occupy two floors and continue above or below the corridor, all enjoy a view over the street and square as well as an outdoor space on the courtyard side.
