Concrete beach house
On an exceptional location in Amsterdam there was a site available for a waterside house: perched on a dune slope, with a superb view out over the water, lost in contemplation of the setting sun. The villa is a no-nonsense blend of big spaces and comfortable privacy. The elevations, which were entirely poured-in-place, acquired an attractive texture from the timber formwork and colour nuances from the concrete mix. Striking cast-iron shell ornaments provide the brutalist volume with a delicate edge. Unusually, the concrete facade really is the load-bearing structure. As such, the villa is a distinctive combination of civil engineering and high-end interior finishing.
